Jane Bamford. Ceramic Artificial Spawning Habitat (ASH) for the critically endangered spotted handfish 2018

Ceramic artificial spawning habitat (ASH) created for the critically endangered spotted handfish in the Derwent River, Tasmania in collaboration with CSIRO Dr Tim Lynch and the spotted handfish conservation team.

The critically endangered spotted handfish (Brachionichthys hirsutus) only exists in 12 sites in the Derwent River. In 2018 CSIRO approached Jane to create 3000 ceramic artificial spawning habitat (ASH) to be scuba deployed into known spotted handfish sites. In September 2018 the first wild spawning occurred around ceramic ASH.
